S3-compatible object storage

Object storage solves a pair of problems together. It moves heavy files such as product photos, scans and attachments off the application server, and it holds backups outside your own network. The second point has become vital, because modern ransomware often hunts down and deletes backup copies before it encrypts anything else.

Provider selection

AWS S3, OVHcloud Object Storage, Google Cloud Storage or an S3-compatible service from a Polish provider, compared on price, location and data retrieval fees.

Buckets and encryption

Separate buckets for backups, archives and application files, server-side encryption and access rules written down in the documentation.

Deletion lock

Object Lock in compliance mode: nobody, not even an administrator with full rights, can remove a copy before the set period ends.

Backup target

Servers, Microsoft 365 and databases land in the bucket automatically, following the schedule in your backup tool.

Keys and permissions

Each system receives its own key limited to what it needs. The backup tool may write but may not delete.

Data lifecycle

Older objects move automatically to a cheaper class or are removed after the retention period, in line with your policy.

Restore test

We recover selected data from the bucket as a trial. Until that test passes, the job is not finished.

Watch out for data retrieval fees. Keeping data in object storage is cheap, but some providers charge separately for every gigabyte you download again. Restoring several terabytes after an incident can produce a nasty surprise on the bill. Before choosing a provider we calculate not only the monthly storage cost but also the price of a full restore.

Questions and answers

OneDrive and Google Drive are for people working on documents, and they sync every change, including changes made by ransomware. Object storage is driven by software through an API, scales almost without limit and can lock data against modification. It suits backups, archives and application files rather than daily editing.

It depends on the data. Retention periods for accounting, HR or medical records come from legislation, so agree them with your accountant, lawyer or DPO. For ordinary backups a sensible pattern is daily copies for 14 days, weekly for two months and monthly for a year.

Yes, on the server side, and for particularly sensitive data also inside the backup tool before it leaves your network. In that case the encryption key lives in your password manager, not with the storage provider.

You pay the provider for gigabytes stored and possibly for retrieval, and you pay us for setup at PLN 190/hour excl. VAT. Ongoing maintenance and backup checks can be included in a support plan.
